Finally
News has been received of the Optus My Tab Froyo 2.2 update. It’s available on the Australian ZTE Optus website, go to the Download tab and select the My Tab 2.2 Pre-paid link to download the ZIP package that includes the ROM and instructions.
**This download is for Australian PREPAID V9 Optus MyTab only** . The postpaid version will be out later in May..
It’ll be approx 153mb in size and has to be downloaded onto a PC for installation, you will have to extract the zip package to read the enclosed instructions.
I won’t be doing an update video because I no longer have the My Tab, the instructions will be clear enough so read them twice and do it once. Make sure the MyTab is charged fully and do not touch your PC or Tab until it has finished completely. So happy updating and keep me informed of any issues

Shhh – I track all the downloads and see people from overseas trying to use your link to get to our secured site and being forbidden….
If possible don’t post links just yet without warnings saying only Australian and New Zealand users can access our site.
Plus this tool is only for the Pre-Paid V9 – this is very important for users to not to try their Post Paid and wait for their tool.
Regards,
D.

My apologies Dean for the link (been removed). Original post has in BOLD RED that it was for Australian Prepaid devices.

Hi Ron,
All good now – It will be on the Optus site later today and it will be on our public site soon.
Cheers,

Thanks Dean, thanks for the update and all the work you guys have done behind the scenes to sort out the minor issues with the pre-release over the weekend.

Ron just thought you would like to know. even with the 2.2 update im still getting error messages when trying to load flash. I have installed it manually and still no luck. When I load “Smart Flash” it tells me that flash isnt installed. Kind of pointless having the update to 2.2 but still no flash support.

Hmm, not good. The general opinion is that flash on the ZTE would be hard because the hardware wasn’t high spec. I’d try the ZTE forums, you have to register with your Australian ISP email address (its an Aus/NZ forum only). They are good source of info.

Will be interested to see how this performs, my device is post-paid though so can’t use this one. Having vanilla 2.2 on mine I am now really inclined to install this at mine gets rid of all the optus bloat and de-brands the device.

I meant I am NOT inclined to install the optus firmware lol.

Hi Dylan, yes I’m a fan of modded ROMS though only on my Desire and my old iPhone 3gs. I never went down that track with the MyTab because the community activity wasn’t high whilst I had it.

Great ;-( and you think that Australian are NOT traveling anywhere.
I bough mine last Thursday in Canberra at Dick Smith and actually like it very much but not able to upgrade ( business trip which will last ~ 30 days). This kind of stupid to do in 21st century. So I am looking for Australian proxy or need to ask some friends to download it to me. Just plain annoyances in my opinion.

Hi Andrii,
Hey sorry to hear of your problem, but nowhere have I stated that I’m connected with OPTUS or ZTE. I’m just doing this as I enjoy the tech and the MyTab was one of my gadgets at the time. The fact that you can’t wait for ~30 days to return to Australia to upgrade is a bit unfortunate, but its not the end of the world

Sorry for confusion, Ron. I did not criticise you and I am sorry if it sound like I did. I am actually appreciating what you are doing
.
. One is truly tempting with Clockwork recovery, true root, few enhancements including JIT,
I just think it is plain stupid to restrict site access to specific countries keeping in mind that update will ONLY work on OPTUS MyTab.
Yes, it is definitely not the end of work and crazy situation with update tool force me to READ more about topic.
As a result I learn much more about device and have 3 options to upgrade to 2.2
all OPTUS “useful” software uninstalled (sorry OPTUS they are mostly useless) and so on. It will most probably void warranty but I do not care (already did similar thinks with my Android phone and very happy).
I will research more before rushing in installing upgrade, but MyTab is truly impressive device for 149 $ I paid for it!
Ron, could you do me a favour and check what is your kernel version on your MyTab please?
Best regards,
Andrii.

Hi Andrii
lol… I may be doing one in the next week or so though.
Thanks for the reply, yes I agree they do tend to be restrictive but have an idea that even though Android is essentially open source, manufacturers are rightly protective of their input (usually the stuff you don’t want hehe). I’m not a fan of the slowness that some roll out new ROM’s and have ranted about it before in a previous post.
There are other options yeah, was really close to doing a quick root but at the time it was kinda new so didn’t bother. My phones are always modded though cause I like to customise. It’s an individual’s choice though and it does carry risks with both outright bricking or if you need warranty in an unrelated issue.
Sorry, haven’t got my Tab anymore, didn’t get to upgrade it either

Hi Rassoul, sorry to hear that, if you broke it I’m afraid the actual cost to fix it may be more than the cost of a new one.

Hi Rob
) Otherwise try a different PC…
Not sure, is the tab going into FTM mode before connecting the USB cable, and is there any recognition of the driver installing?. Try the ZTE Australia forums for info on this one the links in a previous comment (I’m out at the moment

Hi Ron,
Darren here again. Ron do you know of an app i can use to successfully root my v9? I have tried a couple already with no luck
Cheers.

Hi Darren, sorry haven’t had any time to play with root on the Tab. I’d probably avoid it, read around that there’s been mixed success with it. No real advantage with root now that 2.2 is installed. Still have a look around xda-developers etc if you want to read up on the latest.

G’day again ron,
I was hoping to gain root so that I could remove the bloatware that comes bundled with the tab and free some valuable space. Do you know if there is any other way?
Thanks again.

Hi Darren, check my new post it has some links to different info. I’ve found the Optus stuff while annoying to see is basically minimal size-wise. I’m not too sure how effective the roots are at present but have a look

I installed the 2.2 upgrade and now am having issues with performance and the battery wont fully charge even after 8 hours. Incidently i had same issue when connecting to PC with win XP iit didnt recognise hardware so wouldnt do the upgrade. Later tried a diff usb port and it worked but now not that happy with it. The instructions for upgrade mention ensure to wait until upgrade is finished before unplugging the usb cable. When mine was finished it went to ftm again and then started up? So i unplugged it then, hope i didnt stuff the upgrade?

Performance and battery issues, you haven’t installed any new apps/widgets since the new install? I’ve found some random widgets really drag performance down and suck battery from high cpu use. Its easy if it happens straight off but first thing I’d do is clear the widgets (those apps that run on the screen/toptray fulltime) and start fresh. BTW Even with 2.2 you need to be wary of the amount of apps installed in the main storage, the ones you can transfer can go to SD. Check the Applications tab in the settings to see how much you’ve got free.

PS. Sorry for the late reply, I’ve been moving house/towns.

Hi Ron,
I have just brought a Optus tab zte and with help from xda-developers unlocked tablet. The phone is working fine but cant use internet, I am currently with vodaphone prepaid which gives me free talk time and data every time recharge.I do not wish to change providers as it means I have to change my daughters phone provider as well. I went to shop but they said cant connect as they dont have this phone spec ! There must be a way around this or vodaphone is going to lose many customers which is stupid. Pls are you able to advise ?
regards Kim

Hi Kim, if your tab is unlocked from Optus all you should have to do is change the APN in “Settings>Wireless & Networks>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names” I’m not sure what Vodas APN’s are, this post > Voda APN from the Whirlpool forums should give you the settings to use. Save and reboot.
Hope it helps..
All Androids have the same setup and its only the telcos APN which needs to be set, to be fair a lot of shops won’t give you too much technical help as they don’t charge for time
